Online College Dilemma: Dealing With A Difficult Professor

Online College Dilemma: Dealing With A Difficult Professor

AOCsupport February 28, 2021

Tough professors don’t just exist in traditional schools. They’re also in online colleges. You can’t deny that they create tension, which in turn may lead to stress and even anxiety in class. They can turn an otherwise interesting course into an unenjoyable experience.

The four steps below will help you deal with a difficult professor in an efficient and productive manner.

Check your expectations again

board, school, university

Sometimes, frustrations and stress stem from unrealistic expectations. Maybe you’re expecting that the course will be easy. However, your professor’s teaching style makes it hard for you. Or maybe you think your professor is too demanding. But before you overreact, find out whether you’re being sensitive or you’re just being a slacker.

Be open-minded

If your professor has been only teaching your class in the first few weeks of the first semester, don’t decide already that they are tough. Your professor may be just being strict and overly professional to create an impression. Maybe eventually, your professor and your class will hit it off. It may be quite tricky at this point, but you’ve got to give your professor the benefit of the doubt.

Show that you’re interested

Some students tend to slack off when they realize that their professors are tough. You’ve got to resist that temptation. Show your professor that you’re interested in their class. If you have not understood anything during the discussion, send them an email or video-call them. Soon enough, you’ll find that your professor will warm up to you, thus increasing your comfort when you’re in their class.

Talk to your academic advisor

people, women, mother

If your professor is really difficult to deal with, talk to your online college’s academic advisor or dean. For sure, they have already seen other students who have gone through the same situation. Your advisor or dean may even call out your professor’s attention and encourage them to tweak their methods.

What to do when all else fails? Consider dropping the course before you get a failing mark. You may also choose to enroll in the same course that has a different professor.
